The trainer is yours. The subscription is to an app, and the app is a choice.

The KICKR Core works without a subscription to anything. It is a Bluetooth FTMS trainer; the subscription is to the app, and the app is a choice. Zwift's free tier ended in December 2025. MyWhoosh is free but is an install of several gigabytes. Gumwall Grand Prix is free in a browser tab and drives the Core's resistance with real circuit gradients.
OPEN THE GAMEHOW TO PAIR| Option | Cost | Install | Gradient resistance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gumwall Grand Prix | Free | None, browser | Yes | Real circuits, multiplayer, bots, Strava upload. No account needed to ride. |
| MyWhoosh | Free | Several GB app | Yes | Big worlds and workouts; account required. |
| Wahoo app | Free | Phone app | Manual level or ERG only | Firmware, spindown, a plain workout screen. |
| Zwift | $19.99 a month after 14 days | Several GB app | Yes | The benchmark, and the bill. |
Other Wahoo trainers, the KICKR, Snap and Move, are the same story: the Wahoo notes.
Yes. The KICKR Core is a Bluetooth FTMS trainer. It needs no app to work and no subscription to any app. Gumwall Grand Prix pairs it free in Chrome or Edge and drives the resistance with the course.
No. The Wahoo app is free and is only needed for firmware updates and spindown calibration. Wahoo's own training app, SYSTM, has a paid tier, but you do not need it to ride the trainer.
The power comes from the trainer, not the app, so it is the same number in every app. The Core is rated within two percent.
The Zwift One with the Cog pairs the same way over FTMS. You ride one gear and the trainer resistance follows the road.
