Wheelbase

It falls out of everything else.

Monsoon Cycles, Colorado Springs · Updated August 21, 2026

Wheelbase is the distance between the axles, and across our presets it runs from 952mm (1980 Criterium Special) to 1075mm (Expedition Loaded Tourer). Short pivots eagerly and transmits everything; long tracks straight and smooths the road.

The thing to understand is that nobody designs a wheelbase directly. It falls out of the choices you actually make: chainstay length behind, front-center ahead, and front-center itself falls out of reach, head angle, and rake. Wheelbase is a result of those choices, not a choice itself.

Which is why reading it off a geometry chart tells you something real: two bikes with the same stack and reach but 60mm of wheelbase between them will fit the same and ride nothing alike. The long one holds a line through rough pavement and carries luggage without shimmy; the short one changes direction the moment you think about it.

Build both in the Frame Lab and watch which inputs actually move the number.
