Most gravel bikes are drop-bar mountain bikes, not as an insult but as a description of where the numbers came from. French constructeurs solved gravel's actual problem decades before the category had a name, and they solved it with rake, not a slacker head angle.

When "gravel" needed a geometry in a hurry around 2015, the fastest place to borrow one was the mountain bike shelf: slacken the head angle, drop the bottom bracket, stretch the chainstay, bolt on drop bars. It works. It also means most gravel bikes steer like mountain bikes, because trail is mostly a function of head angle and rake, and if you only borrow the angle, you inherit the trail too.
Gravel racing already existed, decades before the word did. It just had a different name and a different accent. French constructeurs were building all-terrain, load-capable, big-tire drop-bar bikes since the 1940s, and they solved the exact problem gravel claims to have just discovered: how do you keep a bike quick and alive on rough surfaces without giving up the handling that makes a bike fun to ride fast. Their answer was not a slacker head angle. It was rake.

Look at trail. A modern MTB sits around 130mm, built for a bike that is meant to plow straight through whatever is in front of it and resist being knocked offline. A typical modern gravel bike, even one that never touches singletrack, lands at 60 to 65mm. Not as extreme as the mountain bike, but the DNA is unmistakable: it got there the same way, by slackening the head angle and not fully compensating with rake. The bike inherited a mountain bike's low-speed manners along with its tire clearance, whether the rider asked for that or not.
The French Randonneuse sits at 42mm trail, a properly quick road bike, and it is carrying more load, in more terrain, than any of these gravel bikes were designed for, because 65mm of rake was doing real work: cancelling out the slack angle instead of just going along with it. That is a builder decision, not an accident. Low trail with a slack-ish angle and high rake was the deliberate answer to "how do we keep a loaded bike quick," and it is a better answer to gravel's actual question than borrowing a mountain bike frame ever was.
Our own Gravel Race geometry runs roughly 72.5 to 73.8 degree head tubes, paired with more rake, so handling stays ultra snappy instead of going vague under speed. 72 degrees is about as slack as I would ever spec a gravel race bike, and even that is getting close to decaleur-on-the-front-rack territory, not race territory. Faster and lighter feeling than the touring end of the French lineage, because a race bike does not need to carry four days of camping gear on the front rack, but it is built the same way the constructeurs built: rake doing real work against the angle, not just tire clearance and a slack front end because that is what "gravel" is supposed to look like.
The other half of the influence is not French. It is Japanese precision in how the tubes actually get joined, filed, and brazed, the same standard I trained to under Yamaguchi, and Italian handling instinct: the belief that a bike built for a long hard day should still want to turn when you ask it to, not just survive the day. A gravel bike built on French geometric logic, Japanese construction discipline, and Italian handling character is not a mountain bike wearing drop bars. It is closer kin to the bikes that were doing this before the category had a name.
